CLAA County Champs results - possibly the fastest ever... (2007 CLAA results)

With a slightly late start in the rain, the pace was unrelenting from start to finish in this years' county championship, with the York/Herford completed before 3pm.

Jill Moore of London Archers cruised to 1st place over a close-fought match between Leo Lang (London Archers, 2nd) and Veronica Bray (Imperial College, 3rd).

London Archers and Imperial College dominated the lineup, but on the gents line, Newham got a look-in to the medals with their up-and-coming archer Mark Davis tying with the comeback kid Brian 'The Shadow' Jones (London Archers), with Mark winning the Bronze on hits. Revelation of the competition was Steve Ellwood (London Archers) - having only started archery a year ago, he's risen to prominence and claimed silver behind the experienced Adam Jenkins (London Archers).

With results like these, it's no surprise that London Archers win the Team Trophy. Imperial College, however, don't return empty handed as Mark Wheelhouse won the Consolation Cup and Alex Crampton-Platt won the Best Novice trophy.

Congratulations to all winners, and our thanks to Maggie Woolf for judging and to Simon Smith for organising. We hope to see you next year for a bigger and better competition!

Exciting News for all Compounds

The English Archery Federation (EAF) has been awarded substantial funding from Sport England to provide a development programme for a group of top performing compound archers to undertake training towards competing in the Commonwealth Games in 2010. The games are scheduled to take place in India in November.

The programme for this will require commitment from the archers selected to undertake training and competition (international and home events) similar to that for recurve of archers under the GNAS world-class performance plan over the next 2 to 2.5 years. The places on the programme will be subject to continued performance achievement throughout this period and substitutions may be made if appropriate.
All compound archers who reach the qualification scores will be eligible and selection will be made at a later date (following the end of the summer outdoor tournament season) when all applications are received. Training is intended to start over the winter months.

This is an early notification. Sport England has advised EAF by telephone that our application has been successful. As soon as the formal written confirmation and conditions are received from Sport England further details will be published and placed on the website of the English Archery Federation

EAF has established a subcommittee, which submitted the bid and will manage the programme. The members are – Les Sinocton (chairman) EMAS, Ted Burnham SCAS and Dave Harris WMAS.

Interested archers be prepared!

Royal Richmond Archery Club’s Pagoda Shoot
Sunday 15th April 2007

The outdoor season is well under way, with Sunday the 15th April witnessing the 8th annual Pagoda Shoot held by Royal Richmond Archery Club at the Old Deer Park. And what a turn out too; 127 archers finished the Albion and 55 the Windsor. Continually growing in popularity, with archers coming far and wide from the surrounding counties, so the event is now divided into separate fields of Windsors and Albions.

Sunny and calm conditions, with the threat of an unusual April heat, greeted CLAA representatives, eight of The London Archers and two from Newham Archers, all of us shooting the Albion. The bar and refreshment facilities came in good use, and the conditions helped another record to be set, alas not by London, but by a Junior Lady Compound with 836 for her Albion.

However, our presence was felt, with Bartosz Mikos (LA) for Gents Recurve thrashing his other seventy-one colleagues with 910. Amongst those catching up on him, Adam Jenkins (LA) came 7th with 828 and Shaun D’Souza (LA) a respectable 27th with 744.

For the Ladies Recurve we missed out on the shiny stuff by a mere twenty points, with 4th place Sarah-Jane Childs (LA) and 5th place Jill Moore (LA) both on 697. 4th place also for our Gentleman Compound Alvaro Lopez with 924. Scott Richardson, Junior Recurve Gent of Newham, did however manage to get in the medals, with 3rd place of 608.

Congratulations to all! It was a most enjoyable day, and a relaxed start to the summer season. Highly recommended.

London narrowly miss out
12 June 2006
In the inter-county match between London and Essex, hosted at London Archers' ground, London's recurve team were beaten in the sweltering heat. With the rounds shot being a York (Gents) and a Windsor (Ladies), London were looking to be in the lead at the half-way mark. However, the unrelenting heat seemed to take its toll on the home side with uncharacteristic (and in some cases, inexplicable) misses, and they failed to press home the advantage. The six highest London scores came to 5731 versus Essex with a combined total of 5756.

The longbow competition, however, wasn't quite so close with the Londoners' lack of experience showing through, amassing 917 to Essex's 2007.

Eleanor Daplyn, the secretary of the County of London Archery Association said "I think the day went really well, although we could all have done with it being a bit cooler! CLAA's improvement, both in scores and level of participation in matches is really heartening."

Full results will be posted here in due course.
